A YEAR IN PICTURES PART 2: MAIN GALLERY

Another series of images, also courtesy of Philip Sayer, of all of the exciting shows we have had in our main gallery throughout 2011. Next year's programme will launch with our annual Mixed Display, a vibrant and packed show comprised entirely of new work. For the first time this will feature specially invited guests, including some previous collaborators and Project Space artists, alongside all of our gallery artists. Following this will be a solo show of dynamic new ceramic pieces by Alison Britton. Other artists due to show this year include Emma Woffenden, Chun Liao, Ken Eastman and Nicholas Rena. A YEAR IN PICTURES PART 1: MARSDEN WOO PROJECT SPACE

A little visual reminder, courtesy of Philip Sayer, of all of the fantastic shows we have had in the downstairs Project Space throughout 2011. The Project Space curator, Tessa Peters, has another series of exciting shows in the pipeline for 2012. The programme kicks off in February with an ambitious immersive installation work titled On Different Levels by the talented young Patrick Mifsud. Other upcoming shows will include atmospheric large-format prints by photographer James Brown and intriguing abstract sculptures by ceramic artist James Evans. To see in the New Year with a flourish Marsden Woo Gallery will hold it’s biggest and most ambitious group exhibition yet, with brand new work from gallery artists and special guests shown side by side in the 2012 Mixed Display, 10th January - 11th February 2012. This promises to be the most refreshingly eclectic, jam-packed exhibition Marsden Woo has seen, and offers a rare opportunity to see the work of all these artists at the same time – definitely one not to be missed.

NEW SHOWS NOW OPEN: 'IDEAL HOME' AND 'FRAGMENTS OF MEMORY'

The private view for our two new shows last week was completely packed... a great success!

Carol McNicoll, Jacqueline Poncelet and Sam Scott are showing dynamic and vibrantly coloured ceramics, paintings and furniture in their group show 'Ideal Home'. In our downstairs project space, Maria Militsi's delicate and beautiful metalwork emerges from found objects as she meditates on the subject of memory and absence.

Both shows continue to 22 December. As you can see from these fantastic photographs by Philip Sayer, they are not to be missed!

MARIA MILITSI IN 'CRAFTS' MAGAINE

The latest issue of Crafts magazine features a small piece about Maria Militsi's current exhibition, 'Fragments of Memory', in our Project Space until 22 December.

OUR UPCOMING SHOWS: 'IDEAL HOME' AND 'FRAGMENTS OF MEMORY'

We have two exciting new shows opening next week...

In the main gallery will be 'Ideal Home', a group show of new work by Carol McNicoll, Jacqueline Poncelet and Sam Scott. With a vibrant mix of playful ceramics, paintings and furniture, the artists will create a warm and inviting environment that explores their shared fascination with the domestic. A bright contrast to the increasingly chilly weather outdoors! You can read more in the press release here.

Maria Milisti's solo show, 'Fragments of Memory', will be taking place in our downstairs Project Space. Through the medium of highly sophisticated metalwork in combination with carefully selected found items and sensitively observed connections, Militsi will explore the ability of objects to act as echoes of experience, fragments of memory or markers of loss. You can read more in the press release here.

Both shows will run from 3 November - 22 December 2011.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES: ALISON BRITTON 'UNFORESEEN EVENTS'

Alison Britton's last show here at Marsden Woo Gallery was Unforeseen Events in 2009, a joint exhibition with Norwegian ceramic artist Marit Tingleff.

Both Britton's sculptural vessel forms and Tingleff's large-scale, wall-mounted ceramic plates featured the painterly application of colourful glazes and explored the process of working towards unexpected or surprising results.

Alison's next show, 16 February - 17 March 2012, will consist of two series of pots that explore her ongoing fascination with the dualities of disjunction and flow. Please follow this link to view a press release.

SPOTLIGHT: CAROL McNICOLL 'OXEN IN THE GARDEN'

Some lovely images from our archives of Carol McNicoll's 'Oxen in the Garden' (2005).

Carol will be showing a brand new series of works alongside paintings by Jacqueline Poncelet and furniture by Sam Scott in the upcoming exhibition Ideal Home, taking place in our main gallery from 3 November - 22 December 2011.

An interview with Carol at her London studio was also featured in the first episode of the three-part BBC documentary Ceramics: A Fragile History (Episode 1: The Story of Clay), available to view on BBC iPlayer until 31st October 2011.

BRITISH CERAMICS BIENNAL, STOKE-ON-TRENT

The British Ceramics Biennal 2011 opens today in Stoke-on-Trent, and will continue until 13 November. The festival features work by Marsden Woo Gallery artists Ken Eastman, Philip Eglin, Dawn Youll, Nao Matsunaga alongside an array of other talented ceramic artists and makers based in the UK, including James Evans who is due to exhibit in our Project Space as part of our exciting 2012 programme.

CAROL McNICOLL FEATURES IN GUARDIAN COVERAGE OF V&A'S NEW 'POSTMODERNISM' EXHIBITION

The new 'Postmodernism' exhibition at the V&A museum, London, not only features the work of Marsden Woo Gallery artist Carol McNicoll, but is also co-curated by Glenn Adamson (Head of Postgraduate Studies and Deputy Head of Research at the V&A) who continues to lead our highly successful ongoing series of artists discussion events.

NEW SHOWS NOW OPEN: CAROLINE & MAISIE BROADHEAD AND RENATO BEZERRA DE MELLO

Wednesday evening saw the successful opening of our fantastic new shows; Caroline & Maisie Broadhead's mother and daughter collaboration of sculptural chairs and photographic prints inspired by old Master paintings, 'Taking the Chair', and Brazilian artist Renato Bezerra de Mello's 'As migalhas da infância / The crumbs of childhood', a Project Space exhibition curated by Tessa Peters and Maria Donato that explores abstract memories of childhood.


Both shows continue to 29 October 2011.

WELCOME BACK... CAROLINE AND MAISIE BROADHEAD FEATURE IN CURRENT ISSUE OF 'CRAFTS' MAGAZINE

There is a major feature about the upcoming show 'Taking the Chair', a collaboration between mother and daughter duo Caroline Broadhead and Maisie Broadhead, in the latest issue of Crafts magazine.


'Taking the Chair is built in layers upon layers upon more layers, from conception to construction. A postmodern lesson in art history, a family photo album, a reflection on the relationship between an object and its image; it’s all these things simultaneously. And it runs the risk of sounding self-involved, a bit impenetrable. But don’t underestimate the magic final ingredient: a healthy dose of Broadhead family humour.'

SUMMER CLOSURE

From 1 to 31 August 2011 the gallery will be closed. We will re-open as usual on 1 September and our next shows will start on 15 September.

'SITTING AND LOOKING' AT SOMERSET HOUSE

The exhibition 'Sitting and Looking', curated by Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley, is currently on display at Somerset House. The show brings together ten well-know artists displaying an unusual juxtaposition of 21st century objects including furniture, fine art photography, ceramics, jewellery, painting and textiles, some of which will be for sale, and explores the links between each art form. One of these artists is Gordon Baldwin, who is also currently showing here at Marsden Woo. Partridge and Walmsley seating is interspersed throughout the show to offer visitors places in which to sit and to look.
