MARSDEN WOO GALLERY AT DESIGN DAYS DUBAI, 18 - 21 MARCH 2013

Marsden Woo Gallery is proud to be taking part in the second annual Design Days Dubai fair, as part of an initiative organised by the British Crafts Council. Works presented from Marsden Woo Gallery will be by artists including Ken Eastman, Chun Liao, Robert Marsden and Martin Smith.

RUPERT ACKROYD EXHIBITING AT 'THE WORLD IS ALMOST SIX THOUSAND YEARS OLD', LINCOLN

Marsden Woo Gallery associated artist Rupert Ackroyd is currently showing at Lincoln’s Collection Museum as part of 'The World is Almost Six Thousand Years Old: Contemporary Art and Archaeology From The Stone Age to The Present'. The exhibition extends across five venues in the city of Lincoln and brings together objects from the County of Lincolnshire’s archaeological holdings with works by over twenty emerging and established contemporary artists.

Ackroyd has created one of four bespoke vitrines which contain archaeological items selected by the artists from The Collection’s holdings.

The World is Almost Six Thousand Years Old is now on and runs until 7 May. For further details please click here.

OUR CURRENT SHOWS REVIEWED IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF CRAFTS MAGAZINE

We are delighted to see such a brilliant review of our current shows, Gordon Baldwin ‘Vessels in White and Black’ and John Rainey ‘Hyper Activity: Scenes From An Other Reality’, in the latest issue of Crafts magazine.

‘In this pairing we have one ceramicist reflecting on a life’s work, with the other just beginning. But differences between Baldwin and Rainey run deeper than this: their aesthetics, their language, their narratives and their making are all counterpoints…’

NOW OPEN: GORDON BALDWIN 'VESSELS IN WHITE AND BLACK' AND JOHN RAINEY 'HYPER ACTIVITY: SCENES FROM AN OTHER REALITY'

Our new exhibitions are now open and feature Gordon Baldwin’s ‘Vessels in White and Black’ in our main gallery, while John Rainey’s ‘Hyper Activity: Scenes From An Other Reality’ takes over the Project Space.

In 'Vessels in White and Black', Gordon Baldwin has created an atmospheric new series made in a spirit of reflection on the highly acclaimed 2012 national touring exhibition 'Objects for a Landscape'. Densely black enclosed forms have a tense, explosive nature and contrast with tall, sensual vessels the colour and texture of deep snow. The exhibition showcases wonderfully stoic and contemplative works from a towering figure of British ceramics.

Meanwhile, in our Project Space, we are delighted to introduce recent RCA graduate John Rainey's first solo show, where he explores how the prevalence of the virtual and the simulated in our daily lives can cause our experiences of ‘reality’ and systems of living to become increasingly hyperreal. His mixed media works investigate themes of identity and synthetic experience using a combination of traditional and digital materials and processes, the installation as a whole carries ideas of multiplicity, observation and self-editing, ideas familiar from our engagement with virtual worlds.

JACQUELINE PONCELET FEATURED IN CRAFTS MAGAZINE

We are thrilled to see such a wonderful article on Marsden Woo Gallery associated artist Jacqueline Poncelet in this month’s issue of Crafts magazine.

Poncelet’s talks about her research behind and influences for her fantastic enamel work ‘Wrapper’ at Edgware Road which was commissioned and produced for London Transport by Art on the Underground.

‘It’s simple, so as not to be overwhelming. I thought of residents opening their curtains and looking at an English sky.’

'MIXED DISPLAY' EXHIBITION NOW OPEN

Our new exhibition 'Mixed Display' is now open and will continue to 2 February. The show, which takes place throughout both floors, features an exciting and eclectic mix of brand new work by all gallery artists and some specially selected guests.

KERRY JAMESON SHORTLISTED FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH SOCIETY OF SCULPTORS 2013 FIRST@108 PUBLIC ART AWARD

The Royal British Society of Sculptors have announced the five finalists of the 2013 FIRST@108 Public Art Award and we are so pleased that Marsden Woo Gallery artist Kerry Jameson is one of them. Congratulations Kerry!

The other shortlisted artists who are interpreting the theme of ‘Transmission’ include Karen Henderson, James Irwin, Adam Kalinowski and Sam Shendi. Further information on the selected artists and the award can be found here.

The exhibition at the Royal British Society of Sculptors runs from 31 January – 29 April 2013.

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ASSOCIATED ARTIST OWEN BULLETT WINNER OF 2012 ING PRIZE

We are delighted to hear that Owen Bullett is the winner of this year's ING Discerning Eye Purchase Prize for his piece 'Divided Self IV'.

The annual ING Discerning Eye exhibition is selected by two artists, two collectors and two critics. This year's selectors were artists Albert Irvin RA and Chantel Joffe; collectors Doris Lockhart Saatchi and Gerald Walker; and critics Charles Darwent (The Independent) annd Skye Sherwin (The Guardian). The Discerning Eye is an educational charity that aims to encourage an understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.

The exhibition has finished, however, details can be found online here and Bullett's exceptional solo show 'Force Field' runs at Marsden Woo Gallery until 22 December.

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ARTISTS FEATURED IN THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART 'THE PERFECT PLACE TO GROW' EXHIBITION

Marsden Woo Gallery artists Alison Britton, Martin Smith and Emma Woffenden, along with associated artist Tord Boontje are all featured in the Royal College of Art's major new exhibition 'The Perfect Place To Grow'.

The show is part of the yearlong celebrations marking the founding of the Royal College and commemorates 175 years of cultivating talent. It features student work alongside professional work from the RCA's staggering array of alumni including David Hockney, the Chapman Brothers and Barbara Hepworth; and of course our Marsden Woo Gallery artists! The exhibition runs until 3 January 2013.

The Project Space, curated by Tessa Peters, will continue to show innovative, up and coming exhibitions- starting with imaginative works by John Rainey using traditional and digital processes.

NAO MATSUNAGA, 'MY PRIMAL MEMORY', NOW OPEN AT DAIWA FOUNDATION

In this solo show at Daiwa Foundation (London), titled 'My Primal Memory', Nao Matsunaga responds to his ideas and experiences of dual cultural and national identity, reflecting on his formative years growing up in Japan, and the latter part of his childhood in England. Although this is a deeply personal investigation, his work references ancient universal themes concerning the human condition.

The show continues until 13 December 2012.

JACQUELINE PONCELET: NEW PERMANENT ARTWORK AT EDGWARE ROAD UNDERGROUND STATION

If you live in London and have taken the Circle line this week you may have seen ‘Wrapper’, a permanent work of art by Marsden Woo Gallery associated artist Jacqueline Poncelet. This work has been made especially to clad the new building and perimeter wall next to Edgware Road Tube station.

Poncelet’s passion for pattern and colour can be seen in the grid of vitreous enamel designed by her to cover the building. Each vivid and richly coloured pattern connects and responds to a different part of the local area and tells the story of its history and environment. It is the largest work created by Poncelet to date and is also the largest vitreous enamel artwork in Europe.

ALISON BRITTON'S 'LIFE AND STILL LIFE' AT UNIVERSITY FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS, SURREY

Alison Britton’s ‘Life and Still Life’ exhibition at the University for the Creative Arts in Surrey opened last month and has been a fantastic success.

This wonderfully eclectic show features a selection of objects from her own ‘study collection’ of other peoples work shown alongside older work and new pots. The exhibition runs until 15 December, to find out more please click here.

NOW OPEN: OWEN BULLETT 'FORCE FIELD' AND RUPERT ACKROYD 'INN, INN, INN'

We are delighted to announce the opening of our very special sculpture double bills. In two simultaneous solo exhibitions, sculptors Owen Bullett and Rupert Ackroyd are showing major bodies of brand new work with us.

In the main gallery Owen Bullett's 'Force Field' comprises a series of highly elegant large-scale abstract works. These pieces, responses to events both mundane and momentous, give a sense of the impact of invisible forces on sculptural form and space. Ancient stone and modern steel, the rough and the refined, heaviness and weightlessness all feature in Bullett's material lexicon; he selects his materials and methods of construction with care and in recognition of their complex historical, cultural and physical associations. In 2010 Bullett debuted the momentous oak and steel work 'Portal' in our Project Space. We are delighted to welcome him back for his second show at Marsden Woo.

Meanwhile, our downstairs Project Space hosts Rupert Ackroyd's 'Inn, Inn, Inn' - a sculptural installation based on the material surfaces commonly found in the English Public House. Ackroyd explains that 'As the backdrop to the activities of the public house, these surfaces have evolved into the physical embodiment of the idea that is the pub.... specifically this exhibition focuses on how such traditions in pub decor have been reinterpreted and redeployed over time.' At the centre of the show is an oak beam partition. In combination with materials derived from wall treatments, this equates to the layered surfaces that are built up within pub interiors over time, and which form a composite collection of histories.

Both shows run until 22 December.
