SPECIAL FOCUS: SERIES OF SIX BRAND NEW WORKS BY DAWN YOULL

Our current exhibition features a very special focus on Dawn Youll's bold series of six brand new ceramic sculptures. Employing rich textures and finishes that make reference to those traditionally associated with domestic interiors, the vibrantly pigmented pieces appear strangely familiar. Through her distinctive language of carefully composed signs and abstract forms, Youll taps into an intriguing world of distorted or forgotten memories. The series is available to view in our 2012 Mixed Display until 11 February and is located in our rear basement gallery. SPOTLIGHT: MARTIN SMITH '2 CORNERS' (2012)

This large-scale wall piece, '2 corners' by Martin Smith, currently features in our 2012 Mixed Display (to 11 February 2012). It is the very latest in a series of major installation works in which Smith explores the use of highly complex geometric patterns, daringly deconstructed across the surfaces of many separate elements. UPCOMING SHOW: GORDON BALDWIN 'OBJECTS FOR A LANDSCAPE' AT YORK ART GALLERY

A major exhibition of work by Gordon Baldwin will open at York Art Gallery next month. Featuring over 100 works dating from the 1960s right up to the present day, the show coincides with the year of Baldwin's 80th birthday and is a fitting testament to his distinguished career as one of the world's most influential ceramic artists. The show will run from 11 February - 10 June 2012 before commencing a national tour.


A new full-colour book to accompany the exhibition, edited by David Whiting and with photography by Philip Sayer, will also launch at the opening.


This is very exciting for us, as many of us here at the gallery have been heavily involved with the project. Marsden Woo Director Tatjana Marsden is the curator of the show, our own gallery artist Martin Smith was commissioned to design all of the bespoke display stands and gallery staff Rachael Crabtree and Alida Sayer have also contributed significantly to many aspects of the organisation and promotion.

MIXED DISPLAY FEATURE IN 'CRAFTS' MAGAZINE ONLINE NEWS

Crafts Magazine have just posted a rather lovely little feature about our 2012 Mixed Display in their online News section...

Marsden Woo Gallery heralds in the new year with a large-scale group exhibition, Mixed Display (until 11 February)

This show does exactly what its title promises, displaying work by a varied group of artists in a range of media. The majority of the 26 exhibitors come from the gallery’s regular stable of artists – and a quick skim through the list of participating names explains why this gallery has such a great reputation as it represents most of the great and good in the field including the likes of Gordon Baldwin, Ken Eastman, Alison Britton and Philip Eglin. 

These stars will be showing alongside a selection of specially invited makers such as Owen Bullett, Tom Foulsham and Alida Sayer who’ve previously showed in the gallery’s downstairs Project Space. ‘These artists in particular were selected as we felt that their work had made a really strong impression, and that it encapsulated the experimental and often conceptual nature of the Project Space’, says the gallery’s Rachael Crabtree. A third group include six associated artists (James Evans, Tony Hayward, Lawson Oyekan, Jacqueline Poncelet, Phil Sayer and Sam Scott) with whom the gallery have a long-term relationship. As both groups will be showing new works, some specially made for the show, this promises to be an exciting and eclectic show and a great way to kick start the artistic new year.

A YEAR IN PICTURES PART 2: MAIN GALLERY

Another series of images, also courtesy of Philip Sayer, of all of the exciting shows we have had in our main gallery throughout 2011. Next year's programme will launch with our annual Mixed Display, a vibrant and packed show comprised entirely of new work. For the first time this will feature specially invited guests, including some previous collaborators and Project Space artists, alongside all of our gallery artists. A YEAR IN PICTURES PART 1: MARSDEN WOO PROJECT SPACE

NEW SHOWS NOW OPEN: 'IDEAL HOME' AND 'FRAGMENTS OF MEMORY'

The private view for our two new shows last week was completely packed... a great success!

Carol McNicoll, Jacqueline Poncelet and Sam Scott are showing dynamic and vibrantly coloured ceramics, paintings and furniture in their group show 'Ideal Home'. In our downstairs project space, Maria Militsi's delicate and beautiful metalwork emerges from found objects as she meditates on the subject of memory and absence.

Both shows continue to 22 December. As you can see from these fantastic photographs by Philip Sayer, they are not to be missed!

MARIA MILITSI IN 'CRAFTS' MAGAINE

The latest issue of Crafts magazine features a small piece about Maria Militsi's current exhibition, 'Fragments of Memory', in our Project Space until 22 December.

OUR UPCOMING SHOWS: 'IDEAL HOME' AND 'FRAGMENTS OF MEMORY'

We have two exciting new shows opening next week...

In the main gallery will be 'Ideal Home', a group show of new work by Carol McNicoll, Jacqueline Poncelet and Sam Scott. With a vibrant mix of playful ceramics, paintings and furniture, the artists will create a warm and inviting environment that explores their shared fascination with the domestic. A bright contrast to the increasingly chilly weather outdoors! You can read more in the press release here.

Maria Milisti's solo show, 'Fragments of Memory', will be taking place in our downstairs Project Space. Through the medium of highly sophisticated metalwork in combination with carefully selected found items and sensitively observed connections, Militsi will explore the ability of objects to act as echoes of experience, fragments of memory or markers of loss. You can read more in the press release here.

Both shows will run from 3 November - 22 December 2011.
