MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ARTIST NAO MATSUNAGA UNDERTAKING RESIDENCY AT OSLO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF THE ARTS

Marsden Woo Gallery artist Nao Matsunaga is now halfway through his residency at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, where he has been making the most of the fantastic facilities available there.

Matsunaga has been experimenting with bronze-casting and glaze, some of these pieces may be viewable in London at our upcoming Many a Slip show, opening in July. He is also continuing to explore the use of plaster and steel in his new work, as was previously seen in Monster Rock Circle- his solo show held at Marsden Woo Gallery recently.

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ASSOCIATED ARTIST NICHOLAS LEES WINS CERSALE PRIZE AT FAENZA BIENNALE

Congratulations to Marsden Woo Gallery associated artist Nicholas Lees, who has just been awarded a major prize at the Biennale in Faenza, Italy!

The Cersale Prize was granted to Four Leaning Vessels, and the jury's citation reads as follows, 'through his flawless technical perfection, the artist communicates a sensation of dematerialized lightness which call to mind “trompe-l-oeil” effects, which are dynamic and bright. The shape overcomes the archetypal of the vase and becomes motion, perception and intangible uncertainty.'

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST IN HIS STUDIO

We thought our readers might like to see a wonderful photo of one of our Marsden Woo Gallery artists, Philip Eglin, hard at work in his studio. You can spot his faithful furry apprentice Nelson in the foreground - named after our esteemed Co-Director Mr. Nelson Woo!

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ARTISTS JAMES RIGLER AND NAO MATSUNAGA: 'PARALLEL LIVES' AT CERAMIC ART LONDON

Marsden Woo Gallery artists and firm friends Nao Matsunaga and James Rigler will be giving a talk at the Royal College of Art at 11am on Friday 17 April as part of Ceramic Art London 2015. Both artists will share the experiences of their creative practices, discussing their education, residencies, awards, exhibition and work philosophies.

NOW SHOWING AT MARSDEN WOO GALLERY: RUPERT ACKROYD, 'CATHEDRAL BLOCKS AND THISTLE SEEDS'

Our new show, Rupert Ackroyd's Cathedral Blocks and Thistle Seeds has just opened, and once more we find Ackroyd occupied with the idea of surface. This time his focus is the spiritual, and its manifestation on the surfaces of physical objects.

Ackroyd has introduced free floating thistle seeds into the gallery which are released at intervals by adapted wall clocks, and enclosed others in a pair of vitrines - in one, the seeds are at rest, in the other, they ride currents of air warmed by tea-lights. A truly captivating and magical exhibition, this is not to be missed!

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ASSOCIATED ARTIST ALIDA SAYER TO BE FIRST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE WITH INTERVIEWS, SOUTH KOREA

From 18 March 2015, Marsden Woo Gallery creative consultant and associated artist Alida Sayer will be the first artist in residence with INTERVIEWS, a new artist-run studio and residency programme based in the city of Andong, South Korea.

Founded in 2014 by Korean artists/film-makers Ilsun Maeng and Ingeun Kim, INTERVIEWS is a not-for-profit organisation that offers an alternative platform for cultural exchange between Korea and the wider international community.

Sayer will spend three months living and working in and around Andong, experiencing and responding to Korean culture while running a series of workshops, discussion, performances and site-specific events during her time there. This new body of research will form the basis of a major solo exhibition at Marsden Woo Gallery in February 2016.

KEN EASTMAN AND PHILIP EGLIN FEATURED IN 'BLUE AND WHITE: BRITISH PRINTED CERAMICS' AT THE V&A

Marsden Woo Gallery artists Ken Eastman and Philip Eglin are also showing at the Victoria and Albert Museum's Blue and White: British Printed Ceramics exhibition, along with Carol McNicoll- whose exhibited work we previously mentioned on the blog.

The show is running until 3 January 2016, is free of charge to enter and shows the wide variety of designs and decoration used in blue and white ceramics in Britain from the 1750s to present day.

MARSDEN WOO GALLERY ARTIST KERRY JAMESON CURRENTLY SHOWING AT LACOSTE GALLERY, MASSACHUSETTS

Marsden Woo Gallery artist Kerry Jameson completed a residency at Emmanuel College, Boston in 2014 and the body of work created there is currently showing at Lacoste Gallery in Concorde, Massachusetts. We are thrilled to add that the exhibition has been phenomenally well received and images of her captivating new series can be viewed on the Lacoste Gallery website here.

EMMANUEL COOPER MEMORIAL LECTURE 2015 WITH ALISON BRITTON OBE

Marsden Woo Gallery artist Alison Britton is presenting the Emmanuel Cooper Memorial Lecture 2015 at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. Use and Beauty: things, thinking and work will take place on Thursday 5 March at 17.30.

The famous pairing of 'use and beauty' is Bernard Leach's and the largest Leach archive resides in Farnham at the Crafts Study Centre. Britton's lecture will explore a thread through her own work over the past few years that weaves different connection to use and beauty in the way her thinking has evolved through the mixed practice of making pots, writing and curating. It celebrates the instability of craft in the spectrum of art and design.

CAROL MCNICOLL FEATURED IN 'BLUE AND WHITE: BRITISH PRINTED CERAMICS' AT THE V&A

A piece by Marsden Woo Gallery artist Carol McNicoll is currently featured in Blue and White: British Printed Ceramics, now showing at the V&A until 3 January 2016.

The display is free of charge to enter and shows the wide variety of designs and decoration used in blue and white printed ceramics in Britain from the 1750s to present day, in both industrial and art production demonstrating how these objects reflect British society, culture and interpret the wider world. UPCOMING SHOW: NAO MATSUNAGA 'MONSTER ROCK CIRCLE' 18 FEBRUARY - 21 MARCH 2015

We have a very exciting new show opening next week - Nao Matsunaga's 'Monster Rock Circle' - which runs until 21 March 2015. In his second solo show with Marsden Woo Gallery, Matsunaga further explore his ongoing fascination with ceremonial objects and archetypes through otherworldly ceramic sculptures and abstract works on paper.

Matsunaga's interest in ritualistic objects, mythical beasts and cultural symbols became enhanced during his period of ceramic artist-in-residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2014. Mysterious motifs run throughout this upcoming show in the forms of talismanic sculptures, totemic wooden elements and vibrant spirited paintings.

JAMES RIGLER 'AT EVERY FADING OF THE STARS' TRAMWAY, GLASGOW 30 JANUARY - 8 MARCH 2015

At Every Fading of the Stars, a new solo exhibition by Marsden Woo Gallery artist James Rigler, has just opened at Tramway, Glasgow. His bold and vibrant ceramic sculptures are inspired by the language of architectural ornament and ruins, and this show further explores his interest in domestic objects, architectural salvage and IKEA.

Rigler was the recipient of the European Ceramic Context New Talent Award 2014 and in 2013 - 2014 undertook a six-month ceramics residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
