ALISON BRITTON FEATURE IN 'CRAFTS' MAGAZINE

The latest issue of Crafts magazine (March/April 2012) features a beautiful double page spread about Alison Britton's current show 'Standing and Running', with writing by Teleri Lloyd-Jones.

'Britton may hint at a softening, a return to the echoes of traditional tableware, but don't be fooled that her work has lost the iconoclastic dynamism for which it became famous... After all, as Britton points out, creativity should always engage with a bit of risk.'

JAMES BROWN'S UPCOMING SHOW FEATURED IN 'IMAGE' MAGAZINE

Image magazine has just published a small feature about James Robert Brown's upcoming exhibition of large-format photography, 'Reverie I - V', showing in our Project Space 22 March - 28 April 2012.

'...These large-scale photographs were taken during a recent trip to Belgrade where Brown ran workshops for the charity RPOINT. Although bleak and unsettling, Brown's strategic use of symmetry evokes ideas of  other-worldliness, giving his photographs a timeless sense of poetic beauty.'

INSTALLATION VIDEO: PATRICK MIFSUD, 'ON DIFFERENT LEVELS'

Patrick Mifsud, the artist whose spectacular installation work Connect/Dissect is currently occupying our Project Space in his solo show 'On Different Levels', has just posted a charming video online documenting the construction of the piece (see below).

Along with the artist himself, a rotating team of four helpers spent almost 5 days installing the show - which included the tying of over 900 tiny knots to 900 corresponding hooks...! The resulting work is not only a highly sophisticated exploration into the manipulation of spatial awareness, but also a subtle and absorbing colour study. As the viewer moves around the space, the many lines of richly pigmented thread appear to condense and separate, moving in and out of focus to form dynamic washes of translucent colour.

The show, curated by Tessa Peters, will continue until 17 March.

SPOTLIGHT: ROBERT MARSDEN 'INTERRUPTIONS' (2011)

In Robert Marsden's most recent piece, 'Interruptions' (2011), there lies a delicate balance between highly controlled complex geometric forms and the rawness of their patinated surfaces. It is the latest in a series of small scale works in which he explores an ongoing fascination with creating elegant and richly textured compositions comprised of stark, angular forms with a variety of different finishes. As these new images show, the piece is a superb example of Marsden's characteristic fine attention to detail and beautiful craftsmanship.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: PHILIP SAYER LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

Long-term collaborator and close friend of the gallery, photographer Philip Sayer, has just launched a brand new website featuring an extensive archive of images dating from his professional beginnings in 1969 right through to his most recent work, including the book to accompany Gordon Baldwin's imminent solo show, 'Objects for a Landscape', opening at York Art Gallery this week.

With a wide-range of subject matter - from iconic portraits of literary, art and design masters such as Philip Larkin, David Hockney and Ettore Sottsass, to editorial spreads from Blueprint magazine (of which Sayer was a founding member) and his own personal compendium of beautifully atmospheric landscape images - this comprehensive site is a fitting testament to both the astounding technical skill and extraordinary creative talent of this most prolific of photographers.

The collection even features a selection of pictures taken in collaboration with us here at the gallery. To all extents and purposes, Sayer is solely responsible for the impressive and unique catalogue of images we hold here, built up over many years since we first opened our doors in 1998.

The site was designed and built by Marsden Woo's own Alida Sayer.
